Winter Weight Gain – Why Does It Happen And What Can We Do?

Author: Deb Vornholt

Winter weight gain is something that almost everyone complains about.  Every single winter the weight starts creeping onto our bodies and for some reason it doesn’t all drop off during summer.  Each winter, as we gain more and more weight, we eventually look up and realize that those few extra leftover pounds have really begun to add up. And even worse, those extra pounds don’t ever seem to want to budge.  So, why do we gain weight in the winter and how can we lose it?

There are a lot of reasons for winter weight gain.  Scientists believe that we are genetically pre-disposed to accumulate extra fat to help us make it through the winter. This is something that we have in common with animals and it was probably a necessary survival tactic for our ancestors.  During the extreme cold, our body used the extra fat layers to keep up warm.  And since food would not have been abundant during the winter and the spring, our bodies used the fat to keep us alive until summer came around again. Humans have probably kept this habit of eating more food in the later summer and fall since fruits and vegetables tend to be ready to pick at this time of year.  It’s also not uncommon to choose foods that have a higher fat content.

Weight gain can be fueled by our hormone levels.  Our appetite and the foods we crave are both influenced by our hormones and other chemicals in the brain.  Scientists also know that some neurotransmitters have an affect on the way we eat.  Studies have found that overweight individuals many times have low levels of these neurotransmitters.  This can cause over eating due to excessive appetite, depression and sleep disorders.  When fall and winter are approaching, there is less daylight which can cause winter depression and cause over eating to occur.  It’s a well known fact that common comfort foods like high sugar treats, chips and cereals are high in carbs that give us both an energy and emotional boost. These types of foods cause you to gain weight and it’s hard not to feel depressed when you gain weight.  This situation creates a vicious cycle that is hard to break.

There are a lot of reasons that we tend to eat foods like cookies, pies and chocolate in the winter that are high in carbs and fats.  The goal is to try and eliminate these foods from our diet and try healthier choices that are lower in fat but high in carbs.  Good choices would include This means potatoes, wholegrain bread without butter, wholegrain rice, cereals, and fresh whole fruit.  These foods are also high in fiber which will help us to feel fuller longer.

In the winter, the cold weather typically makes it easier for people to not exercise.  It’s cold outside and who wants to walk in that kind of climate?  But, in order to curb weight gain, you have to exercise. Join a gym and actually go!  Or, remember that even if you can’t get outside and exercise, you still have your house.  Pick an area in your home and pick an exercise.  You can walk on a treadmill, ride a stationary bike, pop in an exercise DVD of your choice and get moving.  The point is that you have to do something to prevent any more weight gain and hopefully you will actually lose some weight in the process.  You can stop the winter weight gain if you put a little effort into it!

If several winters have come and gone and the extra weight is driving you crazy, you need to stop procrastinating.  You don’t want to look up and find that several MORE winters have come and gone.  Think about how much more weight you will have to lose then!

What weight of water is required to fill a 21-gallon aquarium?

  2. electron1 says:

    21-gallon * 4 qt./gal = 84 qt * 946 ml/qt = 79,464 ml =
    79,464 grams = 79.464 Kg * 9.8 = 778.75 N

    Weight = 778.75 N

    79,464 grams ÷ 454 grams/ lb. = 175 lbs.

I weight 150lb and weight-lift for an hour three times a week. How much weight would I gain in a month?

  4. OnJuice says:

The results is not based on Creatine. But more on your diet. You need to feed your muscles. Creatine minimizing protein breakdown, bring water to Your muscles cells, so what happen is that fibers in your muscles get bigger and stronger.
But to gain weight you need calories. Period. Eat 6 meals a day, high protein and complex carbs.
I suggest that you take a Weight Gainer powder.

How much weight do you have to lose until people start noticing that you’ve lost weight?

  6. Gourdman says:

It depends on your starting weight. If you weigh 350, it’s doubtful that anyone will notice a 10 lb drop. But for a 140 lb woman, 10 lbs make a huge difference. My best answer is that if you lose 10% of your body weight, it will definitely be noticed.

I want to lose weight but I am not all about that diet pill stuff. I tried weight watchers before but I was really busy with getting things ready for my wedding that it was the last thing on my mind to eat right.
If I do weight watchers and run/gym how much weight do you think I would lose in about 2 weeks?

everyone body is different. Remember too if you decide to exercise you have to use your activity points calculator to determine how many extra points you get for the day. But everyone’s body loses weight at a different rate. Someone who jogs everyday while on weight watchers for two weeks could lose 5 lbs where are someone else could lose only 2. A bunch of different things factor into this including what you are eating everyday, how much activity you are doing, how fast your body reacts to exercise (some people need to exercise only days before seeing results while others need to exercise a month before seeing results) how fast your body gains muscle mass, how much water you are drinking, how much water your body retains after exercise and so on and do fourth so there is no way of knowing how much you will lose but cardio IS the best form of exercise for burning fat. Just make sure you are at least doing moderate exercising meaning you are pushing yourself but not too hard (just hard enough that you start to sweat after about 10-15 minutes) and doing at least a half hour of exercise each time.

If you are really looking the best way to lose weight,
I suggest doing what this mom did and combining the Acai diet with a cleansing program for the best result

My pre-pregnancy weight was 151. During the first trimester I lost some weight and was around 144. I gained it back and at my 6 month appointment I weighed in at 155. How much more weight should I gain?

I have been using the Weight Watchers Points Plus Program.
    I have lost nearly 50lbs.
I have the weight LOSS system down.
I need suggestions on how to maintain the weight and keep myself from gaining weight back.

I have just started going to the gym.
I will be starting up my Bikram Yoga again soon as well.

    Anything further would be appreciated.

  14. SusanYarrawonga says:

You need to go on a maintenance diet for the rest of your life.

You need to stick to your Weight Watchers points quota per day and allow yourself only a few extra points a day and keep checking your weight once or twice a day. If you start gaining weight you need to reduce your points quota and if you start losing weight you could allow yourself a few extra points.

I have been on weight watchers for 8 months and already lost 30 pounds. I plan to lose another 30 pounds to get to my goal weight. I am wanting to get on birth control but I am scared I will start gaining weight. Will birth control make me gain weight?

  16. lepr0kan says:

There’s really no way to know, in some women it makes them gain weight and others can lose weight. It all depends on how the hormones effect your body. Don’t be too worried about it though, if you are eating right and exercising it shouldn’t have a negative effect on you.

I need to gain weight, but right now I am in cross country and running on varsity. If I tried to gain weight now, would I become slower?

  18. Apollenaire says:

Are talking about gaining 20 lbs by the end of the season? If not, try to gain the weight but considering all the running you must be doing…
    Good luck with your running!

I want to lose weight fast. I have been on weight watchers for a week, and have only dropped a pound. I want something that works a little faster. Any suggestions?

  20. WriteSites says:

fast is not always a safe way to lose weight. The real key to weight loss is to burn more calories than you take in (sounds simple).

here is a guide to weight loss that can show you some online tools that will help you lose weight (track what you eat, think of exercises to do, etc)
